The article discusses how architect Annie Schwemmer, AIA, the owner and principal architect of Renovation Design Group, transformed the home’s existing layout to be “Open and Inviting” with a new wrap-around porch, expanded kitchen, and updated layout for the primary suite.

Renovation Design Group Hired By 1,500th Client

Renovation Design Group was hired by their 1500th client this month. This milestone was achieved in the firm’s 22nd year of business. When reflecting on this achievement, one of the firm’s founders and current owner, Annie Schwemmer, AIA, says that she is proud of the firm’s “commitment to provide a professional level of service to homeowners that need help renovating their homes.” This niche residential design focused architecture firm has proved successful by bringing in an average of over 65 clients per year with projects that cover a broad range of project styles, sizes, and budgets.
Ann Robinson, AIA Retires

One of Renovation Design Group’s founders, Ann Robinson, AIA, has announced her retirement. Reflecting on her 20 years at the firm, Ann admitted that while she “didn’t love exactly EVERY minute,” she “always looked forward to coming to work and facing the challenges both the business and the design issues presented.”
Ann noted how “Annie was the best business partner I could have hoped for” as well as how delightful the team and clients have been. She shared how “it was so satisfying to see [our clients] daily lives improved as their homes aligned with their life and family goals.”
As she steps into her next chapter she looks forward to having more time for “church and community service, reading, knitting, gardening, family events, and working on the little home we acquired.” She also is excited “to ignore the alarm most days and to read into the early morning.”
The firm will now be solely owned by Annie Schwemmer, AIA.
Utah Style and Design Project Feature
Spring 2024
After completing a project near downtown Salt Lake City, Annie Schwemmer, AIA with Renovation Design Group, was interviewed by Utah Style and Design about the Blue and Bold Modern New Build project. Schwemmer pointed out how despite being a new build, the home “maintains a similar size and feel to the surrounding homes.” Utah Style and Design printed the article in their Spring 2024 issue.

Renovation Design Group’s 20th Anniversary
Summer 2023
20 years ago, Annie Schwemmer, AIA, Ann Robinson, AIA, and Jared Bulloch founded Renovation Design Group. When asked to reflect on the firm’s 20th anniversary, Annie Schwemmer, AIA noted that “nobody wanted to service the residential remodel market because the projects are so small” and that other architecture firms “start out doing remodels but only until they can move on to bigger jobs”. She also mentioned her pride in this big milestone as the firm survived the decrease in work during the Great Recession, buying out their partner Jared, and the influx of work & logistical challenges related to the Covid-19 Pandemic, all while maintaining the firm’s niche in the market.

1,000 Clients

Renovation Design Group has passed its 1,000th client in their 14th year of business. The firm has completed home remodels in various cities along the Wasatch Front over the years, with the majority of projects being in Salt Lake City. Annie Schwemmer, AIA, the co-owner and one of the founders of the firm, says she has learned a lot over the years as a business owner and is extremely proud of this accomplishment, especially considering that the firm made it through the Great Recession.
New Office
2013
Renovation Design Group has relocated their office to the newly completed mixed-use live/work development at Artspace Commons in the up-and-coming Granary District Neighborhood of Salt Lake City. The move comes after multiple years in the Penthouse at Trolley Corners. Renovation Design Group designed the space in-house with Russell and Co Builders completing the build-out to include two meeting rooms, a reception area, a small kitchen, and an open concept area with desks for each employee. Following the move, Annie Schwemmer, AIA says “we’re enjoying the more ‘social’ atmosphere” of the office with many other businesses on the ground level and residents above.

Leadership Changes
March 2013
Renovation Design Group’s business partner, Jared Bulloch, has completed his MBA and will be leaving Renovation Design for new professional opportunities out of state. The firm will be managed and owned by Ann Robinson, AIA and Annie Schwemmer, AIA moving forward. Ann and Annie will both remain in their current positions as architects, and an office manager has been hired to assist with many of the daily operations that Jared oversaw.
Renovation Design Group Celebrates 600th Client

Today Renovation Design Group serviced it’s 600th client. “This milestone is exciting,” says Jared Bulloch, President of the six-year-old firm. “It’s really unheard of for an architectural firm to service this many homeowners who are looking to renovate their homes in such a short period of time. We service about 100 clients per year. Most architects who accept residential remodeling jobs don’t service more than 10 projects of this type a year.”

Renovation Design Project in Renovation Style Magazine

Written by Lisa Thomson, Renovation Style magazine featured a major renovation designed by Renovation Design Group’s Ann Robinson, AIA.
The article appeared in the Fall 2008 issue and highlights a project that converted a fraternity near the University of Utah to a million-plus dollar home. We restored the home using a historical photo that depicted the home before several unusual additions were completed. Even after the home was reduced in size by nearly 1000 square feet, the home increased in value by nearly four times after the renovation was completed.

500 Clients

In their 4th year of business, Renovation Design Group has passed their 500th client. What started out as a school project, at the University of Utah, has grown into the successful business that the founders dreamed of. Annie Vernon, AIA, one of the company partners, said that she is proud of this milestone and is grateful for the homeowners that have trusted the firm to transform their homes, the growing team of 17 employees, and her business partners.

Growing Team, Growing Business, New Office

After a quick stop at an office on 1300 East, Renovation Design Group has outgrown their space and has moved into a larger space in the Penthouse at Trolley Corners. The new office includes a much larger footprint including meeting rooms and a central location with easy access to projects throughout the valley. To celebrate the new office, Renovation Design Group invited clients and partners to stop by for an open house.

Renovation Design Group Moved

Renovation Design Group has moved into an office space on 1300 East. The move comes as the firm has hired two additional employees and needs a dedicated space to meet with each other, partners, and clients. Their new space is in the attic of a historic home that has been converted to office space with a bike shop below. It is a fun space, and they have enjoyed being able to use it to help clients visualize what their converted attic space could feel like.

Renovation Design Group Project in Wall Street Journal

June Fletcher, staff reporter of The Wall Street Journal published an article today that appeared on page W8 featuring a four-thousand-dollar shower that we designed for one of our clients. But this was no ordinary shower.
The article was titled ‘See Spot. See Spot Shower.’ and featured two homeowners that had showers for their dogs one of which was a client of Renovation Design Group (See project). The article highlights the amount of money spent by homeowners on pets ($2.3 Billion on grooming and boarding in 2004), and the increasing trend to include features for pets in homes in the United States.

Ann Robinson and Annie Vernon, architects and principals at Renovation Design Group, were guests on KSRR 1400 AM radio station today. They appeared on the Healthy Wealthy Wow program, a show focusing on women and issues important to women. The show’s hosts, Kim and Robbie, invited Ann and Annie to talk about when to hire an architect for a project and the value that an architect can bring to the design process through creating a master plan to work towards.

Renovation Design Group Project – Carriage House Garage – featured in myHouse Magazine

Barbara Jones Brown, a freelance writer is Salt Lake City, wrote an article that appeared in the May/June 2005 publication of myHouse magazine.
The article was titled ‘A New Carriage House Garage Complements an Existing Historic Residence,’ and featured a garage that Renovation Design Group designed. The article describes how the original garage was a leaky, dark eyesore that barely had enough room for a car, and how the new garage was designed as a charming carriage house that compliments the homeowners 1917 bungalow.
