History

In 2003, founders Annie and Ann became friends while working at a Salt Lake City architecture firm. It was the ability to enhance people’s lives that drew them both to architecture, and they both felt disconnected from the end users on the high school, business office, and resort projects they were currently working on. Ann had started to reflect on the vast experience she gained working on a wide variety of projects but began to see the value of narrowing her practice.

Ann and Annie knew that many homeowners seeking design help with remodels were being turned away by traditional architectural firms that typically handled multi-million-dollar projects. This gap in the market presented an opportunity for Annie and Ann to start their own firm where they could build personal connections with clients and narrow their focus to residential architecture. The problem was that neither of them had a business background.

As Annie was brainstorming, she shared her idea with her sister Lori. Jared, Lori’s husband, was actually taking a business class at the University of Utah where he was assigned to write a business plan. Lori thought maybe Annie and Jared could help each other out to see if a home renovation architecture firm was even possible.

The three began to casually meet to discuss the idea. Jared suggested they enter their plan in a statewide business contest – “The Entrepreneurial Challenge” – which provided the winner with $40K of funding to start a business. They spent a combined 1,000 hours on the project which included designing a few remodels for friends.

When their proposal was one of 30 entries to make it into the semi-final round, they started to get excited that their business idea might actually be possible. In the end, their business plan did not win the contest, but they decided they wanted to keep going. A few months later, in the summer of 2003, Jared, Annie, and Ann resigned from their full-time jobs to focus fully on what is now known as Renovation Design Group.

Jared left the firm in 2013 after helping establish the firm as a business. Ann was able to find her focus as a home renovation architect and after helping 100s of clients remodel their homes, she retired at the end of 2023. Annie is the current owner of Renovation Design Group managing the growing team, business, and of course home renovation projects.

Reviews

“We had a really wonderful experience working with Annie at Renovation Design Group. When you’re doing a big project, it’s challenging to visualize what your final product will look like, and Annie is great at gathering details and turning a vague idea into a reality on paper. She was also very patient with us as we went through several very different design iterations. In addition, we got great recommendations on potential contractors and the pros and cons of working with each. RDG is a wonderful local business and a great investment for any renovation project.”

“Taking on a remodel of my home has been one of the most intense experiences of my life and cannot ever fully express my gratitude to Annie and RDG for supporting me throughout the entire process. I bonded with Annie immediately upon our meeting. Her charisma and confidence put me at ease right from the start. My project had many unique and complicated challenges and Annie was a true guide and advocate for me in navigating the way through. Annie was always in easy communication with me, especially when I was feeling overwhelmed. She always made me feel like I was a valued friend and she understood and supported my experience from start to finish. I am forever grateful. Thank you Annie!”

“Annie was amazing! She was easy to work with, and prompt with her design work. She came to our house and personally saw our space. She presented several design options which would accomplish our remodeling goals and gave us the pros and cons of each, including which were the least expensive and most costly. When hiccups came up in our renovation, she was easily accessible and could answer the contractors questions. This was our second remodel with Annie. We have recommended her to all of our friends and family for their design and remodeling needs.”

-Susan Pinegar

“My wife and I really enjoyed working with Annie. She helped us see a vision of what our home could be and then executed that vision through her talents, hard work and attention to detail. Annie did a great job walking us through the process from the beginning to the end and was always available to answer any questions or provide clarification when needed. Annie is also very personable and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for assistance with a remodel.”

-Justin Scott

“Annie listened to all of our concerns and needs and she incorporated everything we wanted. She even alleviated our structural concerns and was willing to converse about the details through the entire process. The drafters and office staff were amazing to work with, too! We have an older home and other architects recommended that we not make any updates due to challenges with old construction. This team knows how to deal with older homes and did a good job working around those challenges. They don’t shy away from a challenge.”

-Lisa F.

“Annie and her team were great to work with in our necessary, flexible, and functional home addition. We’re pleased with the thought and design that were invested into our project.”
